Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj just signed on for one of the toughest comedy gigs of the year. According to The New York Times, Minhaj will host this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 29th, following the footsteps of previous hosts like Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, Conan O’Brien, Cecily Strong, and last year’s host Larry Wilmore. Unlike previous WHCDs, the president will not be attending this year’s event, and Minhaj will also have some competition thanks to Samantha Bee’s Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner TBS special.
“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD!†Hasan said on the news. “Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.†If Minhaj’s performance is anything like his fantastic speech at last year’s Radio and Television Correspondents’ Association Dinner, we can count on this year’s Trump-free WHCD to be worth the watch.
