In addition to yesterday’s news that ABC has given double-season renewals to Modern Family and The Goldbergs, the network announced a round of comedy news last night with several cancellations, renewals, and series orders. The cancellations include Ken Jeong’s Dr. Ken after two seasons as well as Imaginary Mary and The Real O’Neals, which aired for one and two seasons, respectively. Freshman comedy American Housewife starring Katy Mixon survived with a season 2 order, while Black-ish got a renewal for season 4.
In new series news, the network has ordered a single-cam untitled comedy from Zach Braff formerly titled Start Up, which is based on the podcast of the same name and follows “a brilliant radio journalist, husband and father of two who is about to do something crazy — quit his job and start his own company. He quickly discovers it’s going to be a lot harder than he thought.†The other series order went to The Mayor, which follows “an outspoken, idealistic rapper (played by Brandon Micheal Hall) who runs for office as a publicity stunt and actually gets elected, surprising everyone (including himself) when he has a natural knack for the job and slowly transforms City Hall.†Hamilton alum Daveed Diggs serves as executive producer on the show, which was written by Speechless’ Jeremy Bronson and will also star Yvette Nicole Brown, Bernard Jones, Marcel Spears, and David Spade.
