TBS Orders Simon Rich’s ‘Miracle Workers,’ a Super Deluxe Late Night Block, and More

Today TBS announced several new comedy projects in the works. First up is a Lorne Michaels-produced anthology comedy series created by Simon Rich called Miracle Workers, which will star Daniel Radcliffe and Owen Wilson. TBS has ordered seven episodes of the series, which is set in Heaven and based on Rich’s novel What in God’s Name. The show centers on Radcliffe as Craig, “a low level angel responsible for handling all of humanity’s prayers,†and Wilson will play “Craig’s boss†God, “who has pretty much checked out to focus on his favorite hobbies. To prevent Earth’s destruction, Craig must achieve his most impossible miracle to date.†The show is slated to debut sometime in 2018.

Next up is a 13-episode series order for an animated comedy from Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel called Close Enough, which is described as “a surreal take on transitioning from 20-something to 30-something†and follows “a married couple juggling such everyday challenges as parenthood, friendship, ham theft, stripper clowns and choosing the right day care.†Like Miracle Workers, the show is set to premiere sometime next year.

Also given a series order is a show co-executive produced by Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, and Dave Kneebone called The Dress Up Gang, which is created by the comedy trio of the same name. Directed by Dress Up Gang member Robb Boardman, the show will be set “in a surreal version of Los Angeles,†and Donny Divanian and Cory Loykasek will star as “roommates who look out for each other. Donny, a responsible adult with the temperament and outlook of a child, relies on guidance and life advice from Cory, the dad-like 30-something who has been crashing on his couch for quite some time.â€

Finally, TBS is launching a 90-minute “interactive†late night block with Super Deluxe this fall, which will feature quarter-hour comedies including “scripted series, culturally relevant docu-series and unconventional creative voices from diverse backgrounds.†Here are some of the shows that will premiere on the Super Deluxe block:

Art Theifs – In this series from creators Joseph Carnegie and Ben Jones and executive producers Angela Petrella and Abso Lutely Productions, two friends try to infiltrate the Los Angeles art scene in the hopes of stealing enough priceless art to buy fast cars and a used hot tub. It’s not long before they find out that art in 2017 isn’t always heist-worthy. Dummy – This buddy comedy from creator Cody Heller follows an aspiring writer and her boyfriend’s sex doll. Poundhole – This contemporary take on Soul Train takes place in a surreal underground music club.
