Where would popular fiction be without mismatched pairings? Abbott and Costello, Felix and Oscar, Rhoda and Phyllis — and now, thanks to the ever-expanding superhero bubble, Deadpool and Cable. The fart-fixated mercenary from 2016’s megaprofitable Deadpool is returning in a still-untitled sequel on May 18, and today, we got a first glimpse of his co-star, Cable. The latter is a hard-bitten, heavily armed, nonsense-averse warrior from a dystopian future, and he doesn’t cotton to Deadpool’s brand of sophomoric zaniness.
Speaking of which, there’s plenty of the latter in this featurette-slash-trailer, from a fourth-wall-breaking bit about Cable’s cybernetic arm to an action-figure interlude. Near the end, there’s a relentlessly choppy montage that also offers up looks at the supporting cast, including Zazie Beetz’s fellow mercenary Domino, Brianna Hildebrand’s disaffected teen X-Man Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and — perhaps most surprisingly — T.J. Miller’s Weasel. Given how Miller has been in the hot seat over sexual-misconduct allegations (and some very candid interviews these days), it’ll be interesting to see how the powers that be handle his availability. Oh, and that poor cab driver from the first movie is in yet another mess. Let the tonal whiplash begin!
