Last month, Martin Freeman caused a stir in the Sherlock fan community when he blamed, well, the fans and their high expectations for ruining the show for him. âBeing in that show, it is a mini-Beatles thing,â he said at the time, effectively crushing any dreams for a season five. âPeopleâs expectations, some of itâs not fun any more. Itâs not a thing to be enjoyed, itâs a thing of: âYou better fucking do this, otherwise youâre a câ.â Thatâs not fun anymore.â The literal Sherlock to Freemanâs Watson, Benedict Cumberbatch, has gotten wind of these thoughts, and to paraphrase the great detective himself â he thinks it has lowered the IQ of the whole damn street. âItâs pretty pathetic if thatâs all it takes to let you not want to take grip of your reality. What, because of expectations?â he posited to The Telegraph. âI donât know. I donât necessarily agree with that.â
Still, Cumberbatch understands Freemanâs point of view, although he doesnât believe fan culture is as damaging as he makes it out to be. âThereâs a level of obsession where [the franchise] becomes theirs even though weâre the ones making it,â he continued. âBut I just donât feel affected by that in the same way, I have to say.â Someone get Steven Moffat to weigh in so this news cycle is complete, please.
