This Gorgeous Photo Series Is Full of Hairspiration
It’s when the forecast hits sub-30 degrees and the wind speed creeps to 10-plus miles per hour that I especially miss my protective hairstyles. In a practical sense, braids, cornrows, and locs allow natural hair and delicate curls to hibernate in peace. But they’re also a lifestyle — a beautiful one that highlights black hair as works of art. This idea is at the center of The Hair Appointment, a photo series and exhibit created by Josef Adamu, creative director of Sunday School, a Toronto-based agency focused on visual storytelling driven by people of color. Adamu wanted to celebrate the beauty of black hair styling, and the results were stunning photos capturing the process in and outside of Brooklyn hair salons. Below, a look at selections from the series, otherwise known as all the hairspiration needed to get through a frigid Friday in the middle of January.
