Aubrey Plaza kicked off the Film Independent Spirit Awards with a celebration of sisterhood and murder. A coven of bad bitches (Christina Ricci, Marisa Tomei, Rosanna Arquette, Marcia Gay Harden, and Sharon Stone) lured and sacrificed Finn Wolfhard to the spirit of independent cinema. As they chanted “Mondo Trasho†and prayed to the spirit of Barbara Loden, Brian Tyree Henry looked on in horror. Yay feminism!
As Plaza announced during her opening monologue, this is the 50th anniversary of John Waters’ first film, Mondo Trasho. Waters was on hand to celebrate the event, directing the ceremony. Waters demurred, saying that like Bohemian Rhapsody, TV has no real director.
