Before there was a script or songs “or really an outline†for Documentary Now!’s upcoming parody of Original Cast Album: Company, John Mulaney knew he wanted Richard Kind in the episode. In the clip above, as Kind struggles through a very silly, very fast song about a doorman, you can see why. The TV episode, titled “Original Cast Album: Co-Op,†is a loving send-up of D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary about the making of the cast album of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical Company, centered around a show called Co-Op, which is recording its cast album the day it closed after bad reviews (that’s a plot point incorporated from the recent documentary about Merrily We Roll Along). Mulaney plays an exacting Sondheim substitute Simon Sawyer, while Kind, who was in the Sondheim show Bounce, is one of the actors in the cast, who is not mad about the reviews he got. In the clip above, enjoy watching comedy’s best wheezer at work. The episode airs February 27.
