today in dystopia

The Handmaid’s Tale Is Filming on the National Mall, Which Is As Haunting As You’d Expect

When The Handmaid’s Tale season-three teaser debuted during the Super Bowl, it ended with an image of handmaids standing in formation along the National Mall, with the Washington Monument fashioned into a gargantuan cross in the background. Today, tourists enjoying the sights around the nation’s capitol got to witness dystopia in action. The Hulu show filmed on the Mall today, and images posted to social media really give young girls everywhere something they can aspire to — an exciting life of public service in Washington, D.C. In addition to the large collection of red-robed maids present, some folks were even able to get glimpses of Elisabeth Moss as June, kneeling before Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski). The Washington Monument is barely over a mile from the White House, and we know by now how much Melania Trump loves red. It seems like today’s look on the Mall might be right in line with the First Couple’s taste.
