Late night dedicated Thursday night to Beto O’Rourke, the guy with the failed senatorial campaign and burgeoning presidential campaign. Specifically, they needed to talk about his hand gestures, how many he makes, and whether they are weirder than Trump’s. Trump himself called out Beto’s gesticulations, which only invited the comparison Trevor Noah made on The Daily Show. “If the race comes down to Trump vs. Beto,†he said, “the debates are just going to look like every fighting game we remember from the arcade.â€
Seth Meyers’ Closer Look focused less on Beto’s hands and more on his poor messaging. Beto said in Vanity Fair that he felt like he was born to be president, and that he felt like he was channeling something when he gave a speech during the first event of his senatorial campaign. “In the run-up to 2020, we here at Late Night are going to try really hard and we’re going to ask ourselves, ‘Would we make fun of Donald Trump if he said that?’†said Meyers. He then repeated back Beto’s insane remarks in Trump’s voice and decided that, yeah, they’d roast Trump for saying something so buckwild.
