Julianne Moore has decided to go all-in on digging up some independent movie dirt, specifically that Nicole Holofcener fired her from Can You Ever Forgive Me? (And no, she’s apparently not in the forgiving mood yet.) Back before it was a Melissa McCarthy vehicle directed by Marielle Heller, the Lee Israel literary forger movie was originally going to star Julianne Moore and be directed by Nicole Holofcener. That version reportedly fell apart just before shooting due to “creative differences,†but as Julianne Moore explained on Watch What Happens Live!, it was actually because Holofcener didn’t like Moore’s performance. “I didn’t leave that movie, I was fired,†Moore said. “Yeah, yeah, Nicole fired me.â€
“I think she didn’t like what I was doing,†Moore explained, noting that they were in rehearsal doing preproduction on the movie. “I think that her idea of where the character was was different from my idea of where the character was, and so she fired me.†Moore said she hadn’t seen the Melissa McCarthy version, though she appreciates her as an actress, because the experience is “still kind of painful.†The movie fell apart after Moore’s firing, and Fox Searchlight passed it along to Heller and McCarthy, but Holofcener still ended up getting an Oscar nomination for its screenplay along with original author Jeff Whitty.
