Sometimes the political cold opens on Saturday Night Live lack a clear political thesis. As writers have been able to watch and rewatch testimony, the big takeaway has gotten lost in the specific jokes about minutiae. Not this time. This week on SNL, the main thrust of the cold open was that Michael Cohen is exactly the kind of dingus who would quote ‘90’s pop songs in his testimony before congress. Ben Stiller sang-talked Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn†admirably as Cohen, as did Bill Hader as Jim Jordan, the most high-strung man in Washington. And that’s a highly competitive category.
