Iconic L.A. Club The Comedy Store Is Getting a Docuseries on Showtime

Los Angeles’s iconic comedy club The Comedy Store, which was the inspiration behind the now-canceled series I’m Dying Up Here, is getting the docuseries treatment on Showtime. The network announced today that it’s added a four-part documentary series about the club, which will debut sometime next year. Directed by former stand-up Mike Binder, the series “brings to life the legends, heartbreak and history created at The Comedy Store, which over the past 47 years has launched the careers of a breathtaking array of stars.†The series will include vintage Comedy Store footage as well as interviews with Judd Apatow, Martin Lawrence, David Spade, Bob Saget, and more.

Countless legendary comedians got their start at the Store, including Richard Pryor, Jay Leno, Sam Kinison, David Letterman, and I’m Dying Up Here co-creator Jim Carrey, to name just a few. Just last year, The Comedy Store’s owner and founder Mitzi Shore passed away at age 87. “She opened the door to my dreams! If she loved you, you did well,†Jim Carrey tweeted after her death. “If she didn’t, you did something else.â€

The Comedy Store Is Getting a Docu-Series at Showtime
