Jim Carrey took time out of his busy anti-Trump-painting and feuding-with-Mussolini’s-granddaughter schedule to visit CinemaCon and share a little bit about his role in the new live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, Sonic’s onetime mentor turned arch nemesis. IGN described the footage of Carrey’s descent into supervillainy: “C+C Music Factory’s ‘Everybody Dance Now’ plays over a series of shots of Robotnik, with Jim Carrey doing his slapstick routine. Robotnik gets a latte from his assistant, roughs him up a bit, but the assistant is clearly in awe of him.†The questionable choice of using “Everybody Dance Now†yet again in a children’s comedy notwithstanding, IGN also noted that Carrey’s Robotnik will be tall and lean, with a full head of hair for at least some of the movie. Excuse me? According to the Sonic Bible, Dr. Robotnik is literally and genetically part hardboiled egg. He got spliced! We also found out that the movie will take place in the present day, and not the future world of the games. Will anything in the new Sonic movie look like the video game? Will a svelte, non-egglike man battle a hedgehog with two eyes and very muscular legs in the present day? What kind of nonsense is in store for us come November?! Will Sonic even have to go fast? Yes, of course. Ben Schwartz has assured us that Sonic indeed has gotta go fast. Of this much we can be assured.
