In a film that already tallied three hours of run time, it should come as no surprise that Avengers: Endgame has reels and reels and reels of unused footage, so much so that much-publicized casting choices met their demise before we even saw the characters onscreen. Sadly, this meant 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford was affected by the editing process, as the final cut was completely devoid of her moody (but tapeless) stares. As the film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, are now explaining, her role as Tony Stark’s grown-up daughter, Morgan, was cut — as the scene she appeared in proved to be too confusing for test audiences. “There was an idea that we had that Tony was gonna go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes into,†Joe said in a new Happy Sad Confused podcast episode. “There was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.â€
The intention of the scene, Joe added, was for Tony to achieve “peace†by seeing that his daughter ultimately “forgave†him. “But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie,†he said. “What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t resonating with us on an emotional level.†Well, between Captain America’s ass and thicc Thor, at least something resonated.
