When you get Bill Nighy for your flick, you get commitment. So it should come as no surprise that when Nighy was cast in Detective Pikachu, the man did his homework. “I did a crash course in Pokémon lore and bought every book available, including the deeply impressive Pokédex,” Nighy told The Guardian. “I love the collecting. When I get around to it, I’m going to download the [Pokémon Go] app and go to Strasbourg.” Why Strausbourg? It’s a mystery, not unlike Nighy’s favorite pocket monster, Mew. “The ancient Mew was probably my top, top favourite because he’s just majestic and he was the very first,” said Nighy. “He was elegant and powerful.” Guardian writer Chris Godfrey also posted a deleted quote from Nighy about his love of the Pokédex, and how it reminded him of when he became an action figure with “two free knives.” By sharing his love of pokémon, it’s like he’s given us all a gift at least as valuable as two free knives.
