RuPaul Explains Who Was Actually Camp at the Met Gala

Considering the looks that some of the attendees wore at the Met Gala this year, the world could use a little primer of what camp actually is. Luckily, RuPaul is here to provide. “You have to be able to see the absurdity of life from outside of yourself,†Ru explained to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show the night after dropping in on Anne Hathaway and giving her a real shock, “so the idea of drag is camp because you’re saying I’m not this body, I’m actually God in drag playing humanity.†To further elucidate matters, Ru explained that Céline Dion was “borderline camp†because her look was beautiful, but she herself is “wacky crazy and I love her, and she’s campy because she’s in on the joke†(or in some cases, delightfully not quite in on it). Of course, RuPaul, to RuPaul, was “pure camp,†even while not dressed in drag at the Met Gala, though he told Colbert that he was disappointed because none of the men there, or anyone else, dressed up as camp icon Divine. Watch your John Waters movies and study up, people!
