Give Awkwafina the world! The new A24 movie The Farewell proclaims to be “based on a true lie.†Billi (Awkwafina) finds out that her beloved grandmother is dying from cancer, and the Chinese-born, U.S.-raised woman returns to Changchun to be with her family as they celebrate Nai-Nai’s final weeks. The catch: No one tells Nai-Nai. Instead, the entire family makes up an excuse — her cousin’s wedding — to be by Nai-Nai’s side. Written and directed by Lulu Wang, The Farewell is Awkwafina’s star-making moment: She’s as funny as she is heartbreaking, coming to terms with her upbringing, her emotions, and her batty family.
