Heads-up, Purge Hive! Universal has quietly put a fifth Purge film on its slate, and the sirens of Purge Night will begin wailing on July 10, 2020. If you’re keeping track at home, why yes! That is a pseudo–Independence Day release during a presidential election year. Never a franchise to shy away from overt symbolism, there’s a strong chance P5 will at least allude to the soul of the country being directly at stake with two warring political parties battling to either take or keep control of the United States. (Yes, that also happened in Election Year, but it’s not like the message is less timely now.) Purge creator James DeMonaco, who has written each of the movies and directed all but the fourth one, will once again produce.
A fifth film means the Purge supply runs deep. USA Network renewed the hit series for a second season, though it does not yet have a release date. Honestly, it’s not like DeMonaco & Co. will run out of social and political strife to draw from, so let’s keep this engine running.
