For Connie Britton, playing the character of Debra Newell on Dirty John tapped into so much of the unease and discomfort of being a woman in America today.

“[Newell] was so successful … and yet she couldn’t find her own value without a man,” Britton says of Newell at the Vulture Emmy Studio. “Women are still coming from a tradition where we don’t value ourselves equally.”
