For everyone who never got the chance to see Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton on Broadway (ahem, Beyoncé), the Grammy, Tony, and Emmy winner is rushing back to Broadway for another project that’s close to his heart. Starting performances on September 13 and opening on October 2, Freestyle Love Supreme, a freestyle-rap show, will run at the Booth Theater. The show originated as a rap group featuring Miranda, Anthony Veneziale, and Thomas Kail. They began it while working on In the Heights, which Kail directed. “Before Hamilton, before In the Heights, my first time performing in New York was with a freestyle hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme,†Miranda explained on The Tonight Show, after rap-battling Black Thought.
Freestyle Love Supreme, which made an off-Broadway appearance at the Greenwich House Theater earlier this year, will be comprised of a rotating cast, and you’ll never know who is going to show up. Core members are Andrew Bancroft, Arthur Lewis, Bill Sherman, Chris Sullivan, Anthony Veneziale, and Utkarsh Ambudkar. Rotating cast members include Miranda himself, Christopher Jackson, James Monroe Iglehart, Wayne Brady, and Daveed Diggs. By the time Freestyle Love Supreme opens, Miranda will be done filming both the HBO series His Dark Materials and the In the Heights movie. According to Miranda, he’s hoping to stop by “a couple times a week,†so trying your luck just might be worth it.
