In the Sundance hit Luce, someone is keeping a big secret. But is it Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), the boy raised to be a child soldier who was adopted by white Americans and then grew into a model high-school student? Or is it Mrs. Wilson (Octavia Spencer), a teacher who disapproved of an ideologically radical essay he wrote for class, and who grows more suspicious of the student as a threatening figure? That’s what the school and Luce’s parents (Tim Roth and Naomi Watts) have to figure out as everyone is pushed to confront their own biases. Writer and director Julius Onah earned rave reviews after the film’s festival debut, and the movie arrives in theaters on August 2.
