Two years after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Current War is finally going to hit theaters this fall. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Thomas Edison, Nicholas Hoult is Nikola Tesla, and Michael Shannon is George Westinghouse in this charged-up drama about the fight to bring electricity into people’s homes. There’s backstabbing and sabotaging and bold proclamations of genius, and spoiler alert, it ends with electric power totally working out. This new cut ohm-itted elements people didn’t like at TIFF.
The Current War has been in turnaround since the collapse of the Weinstein Company. It was one of two movies, along with the horror flick Polaroid, produced by TWC that were shelved after dozens of women accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct near the end of 2017. Polaroid still has no release date, but The Current War will start playing for audiences in October.
