London’s Epic Gay Play The Inheritance Is Coming to Broadway This Fall

Broadway loves itself an epic, two-part gay drama. Hot off of an Olivier-winning run in London, Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance, directed by Stephen Daldry, is coming to New York this fall. The play centers on the connections between three generations of gay New Yorkers, taking inspiration from E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End (and because it’s a two-part gay drama, there will also be comparisons to Angels in America). The Broadway run of the show will start performances on September 27 and open November 17 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The show’s design team includes scenic and costume designer Bob Crowley, lighting designer Jon Clark, sound designer Paul Arditti, and music by Paul Englishby. The show will announce its casting in the coming weeks. In the London run, Vanessa Redgrave made a brief appearance as the only female character in the play, and all I’m saying is if we don’t get her in New York, they better rustle up another formidable icon of the stage for us.
