The Daily Show Made a Depressing New Sitcom About Student Loan Debt

Student-loan debt has become a major topic lately thanks to proposed solutions by presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, but often lost in the conversation is the fact that recent graduates left with no option but to move back in with their parents aren’t the only ones affected by this crisis. As Trevor Noah pointed out during last night’s Daily Show, the boomer generation has also been saddled with that same crushing debt — they currently carry $86 billion in student-loan debt for the younger generation, and that debt will follow them until they die. To illustrate this, Noah rolls a clip from a new fake family sitcom the show put together called Meet the Debts. Daily Show correspondents Roy Wood Jr. and Desi Lydic star as the parents, Jaboukie Young-White stars as their child, and they all share one thing in common: They’re screwed by exorbitant student debt and forced to sublet rooms in their home, hide from debt collectors, and even sell their organs to stay afloat. “You’re not the only one with student-loan debt. Find your own damn spot!†Wood tells Young-White while they scramble to stay out of the debt collector’s view. “Stupid-ass master’s degree!†It’s funny because it’s true (and horrifying)!
