The Trump administration has officially responded to Taylor Swift’s petition supporting the Equality Act, saying the bill is full of “poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.†Swift included a message at the end of her music video for “You Need to Calm Down†that urges fans to sign the petition, which calls for the Senate to vote “yes†on the Equality Act. The bill would prevent discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity. Swift mentioned the petition in her VMAs acceptance speech for Video of the Year, noting that it had gotten “half a million signatures, which is five times the amount it would need to warrant a response from the White House.†The response, it sounds like, is a resounding “no.†But if Swift continues in her newfound commitment to activism, this bill might not die on Capitol Hill. Perhaps we need another music video?
