In 1984, Francis Ford Coppola’s epic, sprawling film The Cotton Club opened to tepid reviews and weak box-office returns. This weekend, the film’s lead producer, Robert Evans, died at the age of 89, just days after Coppola’s recut version of the film was released to a much more generous response. Thirty-five years ago, as the film came together, New York’ s Michael Daly painstakingly reported on its troubled production, budget overruns, and even the murder of a major investor. “The Making of The Cotton Club: A True Tale of Hollywood†took up 22 pages of New York’ s May 7, 1984 issue, and you can read it all here.
