Hannah Ann Sluss, reality television’s version of a final girl, was utterly shocked when The Bachelor’s Peter Weber proposed to her after an emotionally tumultuous week in Australia. One month later, she hardly flinched when she got up, handed him back the ring, and left for good.
Such a scene ended the couple’s very short engagement, which was brought forth after Peter admitted he still had lingering feelings for fellow contestant Madison Prewett. (A woman whom, it should be noted, is greatly disliked by his mother.) Despite Peter declaring during his proposal that “it was never a question†he would choose Hannah Ann and that his “heart chooses her forever,†during an arranged Los Angeles rendezvous by the show several weeks later, he initiated a breakup due to “not being able to give my entire heart to you, and you know why that is.†He also repeatedly apologized for “taking away†Hannah Ann’s first engagement. “You took the most precious moment that I can ever imagine away from you,†she scolded him. “Because you selfishly didn’t want me to walk away or send me home.â€
“I don’t need anything more from you. You’ve done enough damage. Here you go, here’s this,†she added, tossing him the ring. “I’m done, I mean that. You betrayed me, and you know it, right? See, that’s all I need to hear. I’ll be able to move forward knowing that you’ve owned up to it. I’m going to get my life back on track now, where it originally was before.â€
The estranged couple were brought together for the first time since their breakup during the live “After the Final Rose†segment, where Hannah Ann’s glorious fury was still intact. (So much so that Peter’s mother, Barbara, frequently applauded her for the ethering of her son.) “You knew exactly what to tell me to keep me with you,†she told Peter. “And one of the more important things you told me was that letting me walk away would be the biggest regret of your life. Words are powerful, Peter. I was always going to stand by you, even through the worst, and you told me things that kept me with you. Even after our breakup, you reached out to my parents saying that you were just processing your emotions, and that you wished more than anything we had met outside reality TV. How does that make any sense? You signed up to be The Bachelor.†Intriguingly, Hannah Ann also said that Peter contacted his ex Bachelorette windmill pal, Hannah Brown, during their engagement period. Given the last word, she told Peter this:
We’ve been through a lot together, and I should have really picked up on the first red flag to give to me, when you wanted to reach out to Hannah Brown to find closure with her. So looking back on it, our engagement involved three women — me, you still being in love with Madison and proposing to me, and your need for closure with Hannah Brown. That is three women involved in our engagement. So a word of advice, if you want to be with a woman, you need to become a real man.
Despite Hannah Ann’s situation seemingly putting her in a prime position to ascend to Bachelorette stardom, Clare Crawley has already been announced as the franchise’s next leading lady. Perhaps those Paradise shores, which have historically been good to Hannahs, will be a solid alternative instead.
