Even if the fate of Broadway and the rest of the theater industry remains very much in doubt months into the COVID shutdown, the Tony Awards are going forward. Today at noon ET, James Monroe Iglehart appeared on a livestream to announce the nominees for the abridged 2019–20 season. To make sure Tony voters would have had a chance to see the nominees, productions that had not just started performances but actually opened by February 19 were the only shows deemed eligible, making for a total of 18 possible nominees. That leaves out Girl From the North Country and the revival of West Side Story, both of which opened after February 19 but before Broadway shut down on March 12, as well as any spring productions that were set to open on March 12 or later. Six, a potential Tony contender in a different timeline, would have opened that night. Typically, the Tony Awards air on CBS in early June, but the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League, which organize the ceremony, have yet to announce the details of when the so-called digital event will take place and in what format. With all those caveats in place, the nominees are …
