On October 28, TMZ reported that Zayn Malik, Gigi Hadid’s former partner, “struck†her mother, Yolanda Hadid, at their Pennsylvania farm a few weeks prior. Now, Vulture has learned that these claims resulted in Malik pleading “no contest†in court to charges of harassment, which included a charge of verbally harassing Gigi. Vulture obtained paperwork relating to the September 27 incident to which Malik pleaded no contest. In a citation, Malik is accused of harassing Jelena Hadid — Jelena is Gigi’s full name — telling her to “strap on some fucking balls and defend your partner against your fucking mother in my house.†Malik is also accused of using “lewd, lascivious, threatening or obscene words†toward Yolanda and of “engaging in continuous cursing towards Hadid,†the paperwork said. According to documents, he also tried to physically engage with a man named John McMahon, Yolanda’s security guard.
“The defendant, Zayn Malik, with the intent to harass, annoy, or alarm another, namely, Yolanda Hadid, grabbed and shoved her into a dress causing mental anguish and physical pain,†the paperwork said.
After pleading no contest, Malik was given 90 days probation on each of the four citation counts and must “successfully complete an anger management class.†He was ordered not to have any contact with Yolanda Hadid.
On October 28, when TMZ broke the allegations that Malik struck Yolanda Hadid, the former One Direction singer posted a comment on Twitter from his Notes app in which he neither denied striking Hadid nor offered any words of apology or remorse for the alleged incident.
“I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago,†Malik wrote. He expressed discontent that the allegation “has been ‘leaked’ to the press,†saying he wants his daughter, Khai, to live in “a place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart.â€
After sharing his Notes statement, Malik went on to deny the claims to TMZ. “I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid and for the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details and I hope that Yolanda will reconsider her false allegations and move towards healing these family issues in private,†he told the site in a statement.
After TMZ reported the assault, People reported that Hadid and Malik have broken up. Per a “Hadid family friend,†the couple “are not together right now.†The source continued, “They are both good parents though. They co-parent. Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild.†A rep for Hadid told People in a statement, “Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.†Khai is 1 year old, and the pair has been linked since November 2015.
