it's so true

Olivia Colman Goes to the Cinema to Cry in Empire of Light

We go to AMC theaters to laugh, to cry, to care. As with the Nicole Kidman adage, Olivia Colman goes to the Empire Cinema for that kind of escape in the trailer for the upcoming Empire of Light. Starring Academy Award winner Colman and BAFTA winner Micheal Ward, the film is set in the 1980s at the English seaside, where a romance blossoms between an employee at the local cinema and a woman who has just returned to town. The relationship may be fraught, though: The magic of cinema may have brought this interracial couple together, but the reality of racism is just outside the theater doors. The film reunites director Sam Mendes with cinematographer Roger Deakins, whose work on 1917 earned him the Oscar for Best Cinematography for its one-take magic. If that film was a love letter to the technical magic of filmmaking, this one is a love letter to the magical place that brings people together to watch the finished product. Toby Jones, Colin Firth, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, and Crystal Clarke round out the cast. Empire of Light arrives in theaters on December 9.
