Congrats to Gru and his gorls: Variety reports that Despicable Me 4 topped the box office on July 4, earning $20.4 million on its second day in theaters. According to Deadline, that also represents the second-best Independence Day performance in the Minions franchise, behind Despicable Me 2’s $24.5 million in 2013. Despicable Me 4 — which introduces the superpowered Mega Minions, plus villains Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and Valentina (Sofia Vergara) — has made $47.6 million so far. It is currently expected to hit $120 million in its first five days. All in all, it’s a good time for kids’ movies, considering that Inside Out 2 crossed the $500 million mark at the domestic box office after making $7.2 million on July 4 (and has already made a billion worldwide). We’re not so sure Despicable Me 4 will get to a billion, but at least it’s already a minion-aire.
