Doechii keeps her ear (and face tape) close to the ground, and what the Swamp wants, the Swamp gets. She finally released her 2020 track “Anxiety” on streaming services on March 4, after the song went viral on TikTok in February. The track is built on an instrumental version of Gotye’s 2012 hit, “Somebody That I Used to Know” — between this song and Kyle Gordon’s viral fun. parody, “We Will Never Die,” it seems as if people are feeling pretty nostalgic for the 2012 stomp-clap, hipstercentric mode of music. On the track, Doechii raps about subjects familiar to anybody who delved into her Grammy-winning mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. “Anxiety / Keep on trying me,” she sings on the chorus. “I feel it quietly / Tryna silence me.” Luckily for us, she is not staying quiet at all.
The song originally came out during peak lockdown in May 2020 as part of her Coven Music Session. In that version, Doechii seems decades younger as she dances around and raps in her bedroom. It remained as a YouTube video, never going to streaming platforms until now. Despite this track now being available to stream, a different song called “ANXIETY” is currently in the top five on both Doechii’s Spotify and Apple Music pages. That’s because, in September 2023, a Jamaican rapper named Sleepy Hallow released a version of “ANXIETY” that sampled Doechii’s track, and it was made available on streaming services. For those still confused, Doechii gave a quick rundown of the sitch on her TikTok, but the TL;DR is stream “Anxiety (Doechii’s Version).”
