Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie are currently on course to tie for the number one spot at the box office this weekend. Variety reports that each film has brought it about $25 million at the box office, with both estimated to hit $31 million through Monday. If Monday’s box office ends up being what breaks that tie, it could drastically change how Garfield feels about Mondays. Currently each studio is reporting that their own film has taken the number one spot. Whichever film does manage to claw its way to that top spot, it’ll mark the worst Memorial Day opening weekend in nearly thirty years — when Casper brought in only $22 million in 1995 (not adjusted for inflation). It’s a particularly tough showing for Furiosa, which had expected to bring in $40 million to $45 million this weekend to begin recouping its hefty $168 million budget. We’ll have to see which film will end up hating Mondays more.
