The app formerly known as Twitter thought it was doing something fun, something for the Summer Olympics beginning on July 21, when it added a dancer emoji at the tail end of “#Breaking†to celebrate the 2024 games’ brand-new sport. Instead, its pictogram of a dancer performing a windmill move appears next to sobering news like “#Breaking[*insert dancing emoji*]: Worldwide outage is affecting airlines, banks, media, and offices from U.S. to Australia,†or “#Breaking[*insert dancing emoji*: Massive protest in #Bannu, asking for peace.†Search the hashtag, and find graphic images of victims in war-torn Gaza, riots in London, and missile attacks in Crimea, all led by a tiny drawing of a text-size Olympian with his legs in the air. Twitter always felt like laughing at a funeral anyway.
