Different areas within towns and cities can be recognised according to their land use. Land uses such as housing and industry can be grouped together into land use zonesThis is the function of the land use i.e what the land is predominately used for in a particular area:
- CBDCentral Business District. The centre of a city where shops and offices are found.
- inner cityThe land use zone made up of the old industrial zone and old housing zone. (old housing and old industrial zones)
- new housing zoneAn area of modern housing located on the outskirts of a settlement.
- new industrial zoneAn area of modern factories located on the outskirts of a settlement.
- new business districtAn area of large shops, supermarkets and entertainments e.g. cinemas located on the outskirts of a settlement.
