Different areas within towns and cities can be recognised according to their land use. Land uses such as housing and industry can be grouped together into This is the function of the land use i.e what the land is predominately used for in a particular area:
- Central Business District. The centre of a city where shops and offices are found.
- The land use zone made up of the old industrial zone and old housing zone. (old housing and old industrial zones)
- An area of modern housing located on the outskirts of a settlement.
- An area of modern factories located on the outskirts of a settlement.
- An area of large shops, supermarkets and entertainments e.g. cinemas located on the outskirts of a settlement.
