How do you double numbers?
Double means two lots of something. There are two ways to double numbers.
You can add the number to itself to get a double.

You can also multiply a number by 2 to get a double.
When you double a number, it ends up twice as big.

Doubling using ten frames
You can work out how to double by using ten frames.
Here is a ten frame with 3 counters.

Here’s another example of how to use ten frames when doubling.
This time the ten frame has 6 counters.

To find doubles using addition, all you need to do is add the number to itself.

Example 1
Here are 8 counters.

What is double 8?
✓ Double 8 is 16.
Did you notice that another ten frame is needed? This makes it easier to see what double 8 is.

Example 2

John collects 4 shells from the beach. The next day, he collects more shells and ends up with double the amount of shells.
How many shells does John have in total?
✓ John now has 8 shells in total.
Did you notice that finding double is the same as adding the same number together twice?
This sum can be used to find double 4.
4 + 4 = 8

Example 3

Omi has 7 balloons. Later, she has double the number of balloons.
How many balloons does Omi have now?
✓ Omi now has 14 balloons in total.
To find double 7, think of it as multiplying by 2.
7 × 2 = 14
Did you notice that doubling a number using multiplication is the same as adding it to itself?
For example:
7 + 7 = 14
7 × 2 = 14
