The Best Matching Holiday Pajamas for Every Type of Family

Depending on where you fall on the holiday-spirit scale, wearing matching family pajamas can feel like a joyful way to kick off the wintertime festivities or a chore. But there’s no denying that it’s become a tradition beloved by many. No matter how you feel, more brands than ever offer tasteful, non-cheesy options for the entire clan, which means “matching” does not necessarily have to mean that everyone is wearing the PJ equivalent of an ugly Christmas sweater. Below, I’ve rounded up the nicest matching sets for all ages from some of our favorite tried-and-true brands, many of which I’ve personally purchased or tested, for everyone from the littlest babies to the elderly relatives. You’ll find picks for every type of celebration — including a few plainer styles that you can wear all year long. And for those of you who believe that the gaudier the pattern the more fun you’ll have on Christmas morning, I’ve got you covered, too. Hanna Andersson makes some of our favorite everyday kids’ pajamas in the thickest ribbed cotton, so it’s no surprise that the brand’s holiday offerings are just as good. (I’ve dressed my older one in Hanna Andersson’s pajamas for over three years now.) Not only do the clothes last forever (and make really nice hand-me-downs), the patterns are some of the best out there, with a PJ for every taste. “Target is one of my favorite places to buy matching PJs because it carries a bunch of sets that are nice-looking, affordable, and come in lots of sizes,” Strategist writer Tembe Denton-Hurst wrote a couple of years ago. You’ll find a range of matching holiday sleepers in traditional holiday-colored patterns like tartan and buffalo, but also novelty prints like holiday gnomes and penguins. (The brand sent me and my whole family a set, and I can attest to how lovely everything feels and how nicely the adult styles drape on the body.) Bamboo viscose is known to have cooling effects for hot sleepers, but it’s also great for year-round wear, allowing you to get more mileage out of your pajamas. Gray might be an unexpected choice for the holidays, but if you want something more seasonal, they have that too. Savannah-based Lake makes luxe-feeling pajamas from premium Pima cotton for every age and size in sophisticated stripes, patterns, and cuts (and holiday prints too), but Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo, who’s expecting, is partial to this maternity set with a flowy, nursing-friendly top and comfy elastic pants that the brand sent her. “They are really soft,” she says.
