If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair, but the hand sanitizer and the electric toothbrush. We asked Devon Lee Carlson, model and co-founder of Wildflower Cases — and the most popular influencer, according to our teen-shopping survey — about the moisturizer, clear brow gel, and vintage-looking jeans she can’t live without.
I seriously crave this stuff. I put it on every morning and every night — even throughout the day if I need it. It feels like drinking a glass of orange juice, nice and refreshing. I always shout it out on my YouTube channel, and I get so many tweets saying, Devon, now I’m addicted to this moisturizer! It’s seriously so good. People will send me pictures of them buying it. I am not joking. I have gotten every single one of my friends to buy it. Ever since I’ve started using it, my skin just looks so much prettier. I haven’t really changed anything else in my skin-care routine besides moisturizing daily with this.
For a smudged liner look, I use Marc Jacobs eyeliner. They sell it at Sephora, and I’ve gone in and bought almost every color they have. I’m just obsessed with the way the way I can move it with the brush — if I want it to stay in place or if I want a more smudged, grungy, I-had-five-minutes-to-do-my-makeup look. My top top top, number one, beats-out-everything shade is the matte dark-brown color. If I’m going for a “hot girl” look, I always do the brown liner in my water line and then smudge bronzer around my eye. I have blue eyes so the brown makes my eyes pop. My second favorite would have to be the jet-black one. If I feel like looking like a badass, I’ll do all black. That’s when I would use clumpy mascara and just go for it. And if I want to be like “fun party girl,” I love the teal one from their metallic collection.
Every time I wear mascara it usually falls under my eye and I look like I have raccoon eyes. The Glossier mascara is the only one I’ve used that never leaves flakes under my eyes. I’d have to say I’m obsessed with that. The bristles are very short, so it’s more of a natural lash. I’ll use the Milk Makeup Kush Mascara if I’m going for more of a clumpy, fuller lash look. But if I want to have a no-makeup look, but wear a little more, I go for the Glossier. The bristles always separate my lashes perfectly.
I can’t live without brow gel. Even if I’m not wearing any makeup, I still have on brow gel. I just keep it classic with the clear one. I literally just push my brows so they stay up. I don’t wear a lot of base makeup — I’ll usually just wear concealer, blush, and a little bronzer — so I feel like if I did a full brow, like pencil it in, it just wouldn’t go with the rest of the look. I sometimes fill them in with Anastasia’s brow pencil, but I love their clear brow gel the best. I feel like it lasts forever, I never see my brows fall. With others, it’ll look good for four hours, then they’re done. But the Anastasia one hardens them, in a good way, and they stay put.
Dude, I love Milk Makeup. One of my favorites is their blush stick in Perk. Every time I do a shoot, I ask if I can put that on because I feel like it makes me look so much better. Every time. It wakes up my face. Perk is more of a red-pink. It’s definitely pink, but there are hints of red. It’s not orangey. And because it’s a cream, it looks really natural. It makes my skin look like, No, I just look like this. It finishes off the healthy glow look.
I actually model for Feel, but I’m obsessed with these jeans. They fit the same as Levi’s 501, but you don’t have to do all the research of finding the perfect-fitting vintage ones. Feel jeans literally mold to your body. And they’re made sustainably. There’s only one style, and they have three washes — white, black, and a regular blue. It’s such a good, classic, ’90s-feeling-but-current-day jean.
I buy them in the huge glass bottle. If it’s the weekend, and I know I’m going to have some drinks at dinner or am headed to some party scenario, I put kombucha in a wine glass with my metal straw. It takes the place of having an alcoholic beverage before going out. It gives me more energy, and I feel like I’m in such a good mood before I go out. I’ve been doing it secretly for two years, and I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. It just sets the tone for the night in a great way. Kombucha just makes me a happier person. I’m already a pretty happy person, but kombucha just seals the deal.
I pick up those big claw clips from Scunci at CVS, Rite Aid, or any drug store. I have them on deck in different containers around my house because my hair is always getting in my face. I’ll just twist it up and put on a clip — I feel like I instantly look cuter. And it’s so ’90s. My mom used to always wear her hair like that, every day. She always says, I can’t believe you wear your hair like that. I should have saved all my stuff from the ’90s, because now it’s all you wear. I usually go for the biggest black clips because I have so much hair. My hair won’t even hold in the smaller sizes.
Wildflower cases are also on my list, duh. We design cases for everyone — we have a case to fit your style, no matter what. I switch them with my outfits or my mood. I feel like, personally, my daytime mood is different than my nighttime mood. Right now during the day, because it’s summer, I’m using our new Hibiscus case. But when I went out last night, I switched it to our Neon Cow case, which is like, a black-light-friendly, hot-pink case with a cow print — it felt more “going out.” And I was wearing all black, so it matched. My phone is always in my hand, so I want it to go with my vibe. Whether it fits in my bag or it not, it’s still going to be in my hand no matter what. Like, when I’m ready to call an Uber or post on my story, I gotta make it look cute.
