We Are All Bob Dylan: Williamsburg Dylan

In I’m Not There, Todd Haynes imagines seven different versions of Bob Dylan. Some people say that’s six too many. We say Haynes is lazy. His film barely scratches the surface. Herewith, Bob Dylan No. 12: Williamsburg Dylan.

Certainly you’ve noticed all the Bob Dylan look-alikes living in Brooklyn — and perhaps you noticed a spike in Williamsburg’s Dylan population just a few months ago. For the new Mark Ronson and Dap Kings remix of “Most Likely You Will Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine),†the producers put out a Craigslist casting call for “Bob Dylan look-a-likes at any stage of his life between 5’7†- 5’9†in height†who also “embody the style of the 1960s, 70s or 80s.†Unsurprisingly, they found plenty. Appropriately enough, the video creates a faceless Williamsburg Dylan who is nothing but a completely superficial evolution of style. At first, there’s the denim and suede folkie, later, his skinny jeans and pointed boots (of Spanish leather, surely), then his scruffy man-in-black phase, his vest-wearing androgyny, scarf-wrapped hippiedom, and, finally, that old desperado cowboy hat. The best part: Casting directors could buy every one of his outfits in any one of the neighborhood thrift stores. (See also Urban Outfitters Dylan.) —Logan Hill
