Russell Brand Set to Storm Radio City Music Hall As Host of the 2009 VMAs

The MTV Video Music Awards have been, in recent years, decidedly strange affairs. After all, there’s a bit of a disconnect between MTV’s current slate of reality-trash programming and the network’s once-yearly attempt to feign that they still have some semblance of music cred. Still, the VMAs still have a “must-watch†air to them, even if you’ve probably only seen a handful of the videos that will end up getting nominated for awards. After holding the last two ceremonies on the West Coast (at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas and on the Paramount backlot in Los Angeles, respectively), MTV has decided to bring the festivities back to NYC this year. The event will be held at Radio City Music Hall on September 13, with the somewhat controversial comedian Russell Brand set to host the affair. The star of the upcoming Drop Dead Fred reboot proved himself to be quite the charmer to everyone last year, with the possible exception of the Jonas Brothers; as you may recall, he created a minor media storm last fall when he made fun of their purity rings. While we can’t imagine he’ll be repeating those same jokes again this year, we sincerely hope he instead uses the opportunity to raise awareness of the single greatest threat plaguing our nation’s youth: Restless Leg Syndrome.
