Because the mythical 23rd James Bond movie will likely never happen, Sam Mendes has lined up his next two projects: He’ll helm a stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to open in London next year, and on Broadway later. After that, he’ll direct On Chesil Beach, a movie version of the Ian McEwan book about a pair of newlywed virgins whose half-witted attempts to diddle each other on their honeymoon lead to disaster (Carey Mulligan is attached). Mike Fleming says Mendes has taken himself out of the running for Oz, the Great and Powerful, which we suppose means Adam Shankman got the gig. So there’s good news for everybody here, especially people wishing for insight into Willy Wonka’s loveless suburban marriage. [Deadline]
