Director Wants to Destroy Your Childhood Memories With Tragic, Live-Action Little Mermaid

Joe Wright, the director of Atonement and The Soloist, is developing a live-action version of The Little Mermaid because, apparently, he would like to hear about how beloved the Disney version of the story is, and how hard it will be to make something that people love as much as that, every day, for the rest of the time that he works on his new film. Since he clearly wants to hear this so very much, we will oblige: The animated Little Mermaid rules, and though it departs dramatically from the original Hans Christian Andersen story, which is actually a total bummer with a super-sad ending, it is iconic. So, unless your movie can top Sebastian’s rendition of “Under the Sea,†— which would be impossible! — you are really setting yourself up, Mr. Wright. But good luck to you anyway: You’ll need it.
