Undercover Sister: Miley Cyrus is going to be an action star. Well, action-comedy, at least. She has signed up to star in Undercover, where she “will play a tough, street-smart private eye hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority.†Allan Loeb (Wall Street 2) co-wrote the script, and Tom Vaughan will direct. Production begins in December. [Deadline]
Off to the Races: Joan Allen is taking a chance on Luck, the upcoming HBO show about horse racing, “the owners, gamblers, jockeys and industry players.†David Milch and Michael Mann (Miami Blue? NYPD Vice?) are collaborating on the show. Allan will play “a woman who runs a program that uses prison inmates to care for broken-down racehorses.†[Deadline]
Neo-Factism: HBO has signed off for a pilot of Documental, a comedy set in London by Tropic Thunder co-writer Justin Theroux and British comedy god Steve Coogan. It will feature “Theroux as a documentary filmmaker who tracks down his idol, an equally inept filmmaker (Coogan), and documents his return to his craft.†Ben Stiller (Another Thunder alum!) will exec produce. [Deadline]
Party at USA: USA, the most-watched basic-cable network of all time, is stocking up on even more pilots. They are all dramas involving wealthy people, big cities, and vice. There’s Eden, which “is about a young hotel worker who, with the help of his escaped con artist cousin Eddie, gets a job as the concierge at an elite NYC hotelâ€; then there’s Over/Under, about a Wall Street hotshot with a gambling problem who loses his job and moves with his wife “to a neighborhood on the cusp of gentrification†where he “finds an unlikely partner and starts to turn his life around in an unexpected wayâ€; finally, there’s Wild Card, which is a procedural about two lawyers based in Vegas.
