Elijah Wood will have a starring role in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, his reps confirmed yesterday. He will reprise his Lord of the Rings character, Frodo Baggins. But! Frodo doesn’t appear in The Hobbit book, which takes place 60 years before the events in Lord of the Rings — before Frodo was even born into J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictitious world. So, Lord of the Rings fans suspect Frodo will be reading the Hobbit tale, a way of framing the film that will serve as an entryway into the Hobbit story. And again the question is asked: Is editing Tolkien sacrilege? Or is this a smart way to bring back a beloved Lord of the Rings character? [Deadline, Pop Watch/EW]
