Director Lars von Trier might have said some slightly outrageous things at his Melancholia press conference today in Cannes … you know, things like, “I am a Nazi,” “I understand Hitler,” and “Maybe I could do the Final Solution.” Needless to say, the festival was not pleased and demanded an explanation from von Trier, who admitted he was “egged on by a provocation,” adding, “If I have hurt someone this morning by the words I said at the press conference, I sincerely apologise. I am not antisemitic or racially prejudiced in any way, nor am I a Nazi.” Meanwhile, his star Kirsten Dunst has not yet apologized for giving von Trier some pretty amazing side-eye, nor should she.
