For a few dramatic days back in November, when Brett Ratner was forced to resign as producer, Eddie Murphy subsequently quit his hosting gig, and Billy Crystal was hired as a last-minute replacement, it was hard to believe that the 2012 Oscar ceremony would be a successful endeavor.
