A fact we did not mention in yesterday’s Song of Summer Dos extravaganza is that Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” currently holds the No. 2 spot on the Billboard “100.” We did not mention this because “Lights,” though infectious and clearly a contender in basic composition, does not qualify for SoS honors because it is too old. Technically, “Lights” could have qualified for last summer’s competition, and that’s just in the U.S.; the song’s been bopping around the U.K. since 2010. The point here is that despite a Royal Wedding endorsement and a famous (to teenagers) boyfriend, it’s taken a little while for the Ellie Goulding wave to get rolling in America — and also that her second album Halcyon, due in October, is perfectly timed to ride that wave all the way to certified Pop Star status. Here’s the lead single off that album, “Anything Could Happen,” which should satisfy any Annie Lennox cravings you might have woken up with this morning. Also, has anyone checked on Skrillex today? We shouldn’t read into this, right? Right?
