ABC canceled its critically-acclaimed but low-rated sitcom Happy Endings last month after three seasons, and cable channel USA went into negotiations to keep the series going with a fourth season immediately after ABC’s decision. Now, though, it looks like the comedy won’t be moving ahead at USA. Deadline reports that network execs have passed and that they were reluctant to invest marketing and promotion money in the show due to its low ratings and would rather put that money towards its new original comedies like Denis Leary’s Sirens or Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair’s Playing House.
While USA has turned down an opportunity to produce original episodes, Deadline reports that Happy Endings’ studio, Sony TV, “continues conversations with other possible distributors†and cites Netflix and Amazon, both of which have been venturing into original comedy programming as of late, as potential new homes for the series. We’ll keep you posted on Happy Endings continues to try to find a new home.
