Woody Allen to Receive Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award

How do the Golden Globes follow up Jodie Foster’s infamous Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech from last year? By figuring out a way to get Woody Allen to actually attend an awards show. It was announced today that Allen will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 71st Annual Golden Globes on January 12, 2014. Besides Foster, the last few recipients have been Morgan Freeman (2012), Robert De Niro (2011), Martin Scorsese (2010), and Steven Spielberg (2009).  There’s no doubt that Allen is deserving of the honor, as he has been nominated for thirteen Golden Globes over his career, not to mention 23 Oscars; however, it’s surprising that he’d accept it. Allen has famously never attended an awards show (save the post-9/11 Oscars, when he appeared to urge his peers to continue to film in NY), telling ABC News in 1974, “The whole concept of awards is silly. I cannot abide by the judgment of other people, because if you accept it when they say you deserve an award, then you have to accept it when they say you don’t.” It’s going to be a fun acceptance speech.
